Recently it was announced that Nintendo will acquire Dynamo Pictures, with the studio changing their name to ‘Nintendo Pictures’ upon completion of the acquisition:

From what I am aware of, the studio’s portfolio (per the studio’s own website their page on ANN, and a few Google searches) had been known for CGI for random middle-of-the-road productions, and duds in beloved properties with a few exceptions. (One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island, Evangelion 2.0, being the exceptions)

Why Nintendo chose to get into dedicated CGI? simple: it’s a part of a Wii U/3DS-era initiative by the late, great Satoru Iwata to get Nintendo’s properties into other mediums, with mobile games, (like Fire Emblem Heroes and Mario Kart Tour) Theme Parks (Ala Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios) and films. (like next year’s yet-to-be revealed Illumination-produced Super Mario movie feat. Chris Pratt as the titular character)

Why Nintendo chose Dynamo Pictures? Likely due to their work on two things; the CG cutscenes for Final Fantasy XIII-II Metroid: Other M, and most famously; Pikmin Short Movies. (Of both HD and 3D varieties)

This would be Nintendo’s third acquisition of the 2020’s, following last year’s purchase of Vancouver-based Next Level Games (of Luigi’s Mansion 3, and most recently, Mario Strikers Battle League), and following this year’s purchase of longtime partner studio Systems Research and Development (SRD) amongst all this talk in the gaming industry of Microsoft buying Bethesda and the ‘troubled’ Activision-Blizzard, SONY buying Bungie, and Square-Enix cutting it’s losses by selling it’s western studios to Embracer Group.
